The most professional way to admit you were wrong

The most professional way to admit you were wrongThe most professional way to admit you were wrongNo matter how skilled you are at your profession, how long youve been killing it in the workforce or how often you go above and beyond your job description - mistakes happen. Though you might consider yourself a boss and a superhero at the top of your game, at your core, you are thoroughly human - and simply cant get everything just right. This means every once in a while, youll have to admit youre wrong in the office, whether to a colleague, your manager or an employee. To effectively and professionally do this takes maturity and emotional intelligence, according to career and branding expert Wendi Weiner. By having the courage and the smarts to remove said-foot out of said-mouth can help salvage working dynamics, create a stronger alignment in your environment and most importantly, help you grow as an individual, Weiner notes. The conversation, no matter how mature you believe yoursel f to be, will be uncomfortable. But by actively approaching the topic and leaning into this awkward situation for both parteies, you iterate your confidence and strength in your performance - even with an error. Here, experts reveal how to say I was wrong, and keep moving forward.Take ownership and responsibilityHeres the deal after explaining to your assistant several times how to complete a task, he or she delivers lackluster work, yet again. You understand they are learning and it is your responsibility to help them improve, but youre on a deadline and frustrated. You lash out - and then feel guilty about it for the rest of the afternoon. Its time to swallow your ego and apologize, making you the stronger person, according to Weiner.Even if it was not your intention to hurt the persons feelings, by taking ownership of it, you will boost, morale as well as show that you are dedicated to being a perceptive feeler of others, she explains.Say the ball is in the other court and you somehow missed a deadline with a client, Weiner recommends apologizing ASAP, since time is of the essence. Dont place blame on anything or anyone, just take responsibility. Blowing a deadline can have treacherous consequences, particularly if a client is waiting for a project delivery from you. If you blow a deadline, no matter how busy you are or why it happened, apologize for it, and take ownership of it, she adds.Address it quicklyDo you remember that one annoying habit your best friend had three months ago where she would skip out on plans at the last minute? Now that shes figured out her wrongdoing, do you think she should apologize? Maybe so, but the impact wont be quite as strong as it would have been if she said Whoops at that moment. Career coach and author Mary Camuto stresses apologizing in real-time if you can. This makes it less likely to fester and nips any drama instantly. However, she also says it is important to have your wits about you before apologizing. You must b e in good emotional control in order to be effective in this type of conversation and cannot risk becoming defensive, sullen or half-hearted, she explains.Dont over-apologizeIs it too late to say youre sorry? Nope. But it can be too bad to say it too much. In other words, the valuable part of apologizing is acknowledging what happened, understanding why it happened and then getting back to work. If you keep coming back to the mistake, you make it a bigger deal than what it was in the first place. It isnt always about the apology but how you move on from it, and the actions you take after the incident, Weiner continues. Show that you are sorry by correcting the behavior that caused the wrongdoing and try to show the ways in which you will not commit it again.Dont grovelMuch like overdoing it on the Im sorry speech, mentor and business coach Christine Agro says it doesnt bode well for you to grovel either. When you act overly ashamed, embarrassed or affected by the wrongdoing, you will encourage others to take on this negative mindset, too.Be clear about where the error is and offer a solution or correction, she continues. If you hold a place of certainty, others will follow suit and your admission will present like a mature conversation rather than a fearful atonement.Listen - dont argueIn the case your manager is asking you to step up and apologize for something when it didnt occur to you to do so - it can be even mora difficult to admit your mistake. Camuto encourages professionals to sit back, take a deep breath and listen. When you start conjuring up excuses, fighting for your side of the story or overall, not accept your part in the situation, you can come across as petty or insincere. Actually digesting the information makes it more likely youll be positively perceived by those in your company.Listen to the other persons viewpoint and feelings. Learn from listening and demonstrate awareness of what you could have done differently. This requires active l istening and demonstrates your openness, flexibility, and emotional intelligence. There is strength in admitting we were wrong, she explains.

How to Handle a Phone Interview

How to Handle a Phone InterviewHow to Handle a Phone InterviewHow to interview in different situations ranging from web videoconferences to lunch with an acquaintance and even the dreaded phone interview. The phone interview arguably requires the least preparation. You dont have to agonize about your outfit, you can have notes about the company at your disposal, and you even have the ability to use the Web to perform additional research during the conversation. But that doesnt mean you should approach a phone interview carelessly.Be passionateMost companies use the phone interview as an preliminary screening, a low-intensity interview conducted by a juniorin human-resources staffer to gauge the candidates abilities and interest before investing an executives time in an in-person interview. But when distance is a factor, phone interviews can take the place of site visits, and they will be intense. Either way, You want to convey passion and professionalism, said Deborah Brown-Volkman, a professional certified coach ( PCC ) and the president of a career, life and mentor coaching company. Answer the phone with lots of energy. For example Its nice to meet with you today I am really looking forward to our interview. Dont be afraid to emphasize that you really want a job for fear of sounding desperate, Brown-Volkman counseled. Say that you are excited about the job, that you are a perfect fit for the job and that you really want this job.Be on timeBe ready at the appointed interview time. I have done plenty of phone interviews where I know I have just woken people up or where there have been all kinds of other things going on in the background. I would encourage full attention, said Kelly Dingee, a sourcing researcher and executive trainer for AIRS, an executive search firm. Also consider technical issues that must be managed before the start time. If you use a headset, make aya it is a good one and that you dont have any noise on the line. Readiness is key.Eliminate distractionsIf you have a dog, you need to find a place for that dog to be for the half-hour or 45 minutes that you are doing the phone interview, Dingee said. If you are unemployed and you are at home taking care of the kids, you need to schedule the phone interview when you can have quiet time not so much because you dont want employers to have insight into your private life but more because you want to be on your game. The less distraction you have, the better.Be preparedHaving notes handy in front of you is useful, but Dingee advises candidates to read up on the company, review its Web site and have an understanding of the organizations priorities. You need to reflect back on the interviewer (and the company) during the interview and make sure it is about them as much as it is about you. You want them to know that you are genuinely interested and you have done your research, she said.Phone interviews are quick, Brown-Volkman noted. I would make a list of three bullet points tha t you want to make. If you dont get them across during the interview, you can wrap up by thanking the interviewer and then ask to leave him or her with three points.

How to Rehearse for an Interview

How to Rehearse for an einstellungsgesprchHow to Rehearse for an InterviewRehearsing is one of the best ways to prepare for a job einstellungsgesprch. A mock einstellungsgesprch with a professional is one way to learn and practice interviewing skills. Another is to use an online interview preparation tool. Both of those are fee-based options, but you can still practice even if you cant afford professional assistance. Do-It-Yourself Interviewing Practice There are a number of ways to prepare for an interview at home without the help of a professional career counselor or coach or a fee-based service. You can practice interviews all by yourself or recruit friends and family to assist you. Know the Interview Process If youre new to the workplace or havent interviewed in awhile, know what will likely happen during the interview so you dont get any surprises. Make sure you understandhow a job interview works so you know what to expect. Practice Answering Interview Questions The simplest way to prepare is to create a list of common interview questions and answer each question out loud. The more you practice, the more you will be prepared to respond during an actual job interview. Use Flashcards Write the questions down on flashcards. By shuffling the flashcards, you will become comfortable answering questions in any order. Record Yourself Practicing If you have a webcam, video camera or tape recorder, record your responses and play them back. Assess your body language (if you have a video camera) and your answers to the questions. How are your posture and eye contact? Are you fidgeting? Are your answers too long-winded? Do you sound confident? If you do not have a video camera or tape recorder, practice in front of the mirror. Recruit a Friend or Family Member You can also give a list of questions to a friend or family member and have them interview you. Ask your practice interviewer for constructive feedback. Practicing with a friend or family member will provide you with a comfortable, safe environment for honing your interviewing skills and receiving feedback. Dress the Part One way to make a do-it-yourself practice interview seem more like an actual job interview is to dress in interview attire. Not only will dressing the part makes you feel like you are heading to a real job interview, but it will also give you the opportunity to make sure that your interview clothes are in order and youre ready to go. Set up an Interview Space It will also feel more like an actual interview if you set up an interview space. Even if its your kitchen table (cleared of clutter) with a chair on either side, one for you and one for the interviewer, it will set the scene for your practice interview to be more formal. Practicing your interview skills will help reduce stress during your actual interview, and will allow you to focus on connecting with your interviewer rather than struggling to come up with answers. The more familiar you are with the types of interview questions youll be asked, the better prepared you will be to interview. Heres a list of practice interview questions for a variety of occupations, types of jobs and types of interviews to review. Taking some time to practice will boost your confidence and help you ace your job interviews.

How to Handle Career Mistakes

How to Handle Career MistakesHow to Handle Career MistakesThe following welches excerpted fromThe BigsThe Secrets Nobody Tells Students and Young Professionals About How to Choose a Career, Find a Great Job, Do a Great Job, Be a Leader, Start a Business, Manage Your Money, Stay Out of Trouble, and Live A Happy Lifewith the authors permission. No matter how much you know or how hard you try, you are going to make mistakes as you pursue your career. The question is how will you handle them? Whatever you do, I caution you notto follow in the footsteps of a former coworker I refer to as Never.Meet NeverNever joined Greenwich Capital a few years before I took over as co-CEO. From the first day she walked in the door, Never projected an aura of confidence and competence. Being young, Never had a junior position at the company. However, because she handled every task efficiently and professionally, more responsibility naturally flowed herbei way. Never quickly made many friends and was liked and respected throughout the firm.Your first few years at a company are about establishing a foundation on which to build a successful career. The foundation Never constructed in her first few years at Greenwich Capital was rock-solid. But then cracks began to appear. The first one was so small it was not really regarded as a problem but more as a surprising personality quirk.Almost simultaneously, a handful of employees who worked closely with Never realized she nevertook responsibility for any mistakes and never apologized for anything. It had taken a few years to notice because Never was so good at her job that she did not make many mistakes.Because Never was well-liked, competent and hardworking, people did not dwell on this issue and instead viewed it as a peccadillo that was assigned to the nobodys perfect bin. The problem was that over the next few years new and much more serious cracks in the foundation appeared as Never began to periodically abuse her position of power. Wh ile she still didnt find fault with herself, she was quick to find it in others. In subtle and not-so-subtle ways she let them know.Poor GuyWhile there were numerous examples of Nevers abuse of power, the worst was her treatment of one poor guy in the mailroom. The Poor Guy was a gentle soulmusik who loved working at Greenwich Capital. A senior manager of the firm complained he was not receiving his daily newspaper delivery to his office. Never immediately confronted The Poor Guy, accused him of stealing the newspapers and told him she was going to see he got fired. To say that this man was distraught would be a gross understatement. The world he loved was crashing down around him.Never got the head of facilities involved because the mailroom reported to him. Before he agreed to fire anybody, he looked at security tapes to see what really happened. Lo and behold, the tapes revealed that the master criminal was a very senior and very powerful trader at the firm. The trader was asked politely to stop taking the newspapers. When Never was informed of the truth, she laughed it off and, of course, never apologized to The Poor Guy. Not surprisingly, the goodwill and support Never had rightfully earned over the years started to disappear. When Never left Greenwich eight years after her arrival, most of her coworkers were more relieved than sorry to see her go.Three Lessons from Nevers Experience1. Take responsibility for all mistakes you make. If you are a competent and valued employee, when you do take responsibility it will be viewed as a sign of strength, not weakness, by your coworkers. Plus, youll be in a position to learn and improve.2. Understand that how your boss views you will be largely a function of how your peers and subordinates see you. All my interactions with Never, from her first day at Greenwich Capital to her last, were nothing but positive. However, my opinion of her deteriorated as I came to understand how she treated her peers and subordinates.3 . Everyone starts each new job (especially their first job) with a sense of trepidation. Will I fit in? Will people be nice to me?The truth is, most people at most companies love having new employees who are hardworking, pleasant and have the ability to help make the company better. The initial warm reception that Never received at Greenwich Capital is not unusual. As with so many other issues, work and sports are identical this way. If you are a rookie and helping the team win and are supportive and considerate of your teammates you will be welcomed with open arms and held in high regard.Ben Carpenter, author ofThe BigsThe Secrets Nobody Tells Students and Young Professionals About How to Choose a Career, Find a Great Job, Do a Great Job, Be a Leader, Start a Business, Manage Your Money, Stay Out of Trouble, and Live A Happy Life, began his career as a commercial lending Officer at the Bankers Trust Company. Two years later he joined Bankers Trusts Primary Dealer selling U.S. Treasur y bonds. After a brief stop at Morgan Stanley, Ben joined Greenwich Capital which, during his 22-year career there, became one of the most respected and profitable firms on Wall Street. At Greenwich Capital, Carpenter was a salesman, trader, sales manager, co-chief operating Officer, and co-CEO.

Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the workplace. pWhile some industries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When was the last time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 million construction employees are women.pBut the construction industry has a lot mora to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or looking to make a pivot should consider a career in construction.h21. Fuel Innovation/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent business strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the performance of gender-diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solving. h22. Capitalize on Demand/h2pT he construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial positions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership roles would help drive innova tion and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive option for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. S ense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.

Find a Career in Fine Art Restoration or Conservation

Find a Career in Fine Art Restoration or ConservationFind a Career in Fine Art Restoration or ConservationThe fields of fine species restoration and art conservation share similar goals, but they involve different approaches and methods. Art restorers clean the artwork to try to bring it back to its original condition as the artist had intended, whereas art conservators research, document and try to prevent further damage to the artwork. Although the two jobs have different aims, there is some overlap in the technical expertise required to restore and conserve artworks. Job Prospects There is a wide range of jobs for both art restorers and art conservators. For art restorers, jobs include restoring murals and mosaics at onsite locations, repairing broken ceramics, and cleaning paintings in galleries or museums. Art conservators may also be part of a museums full-time staff, in charge of the museums collection of artworks, or they may work independently. In a conservation departme nt, a conservator uses high-tech scientific tools such as Raman spectroscopy and an X-ray fluorescence spectrometer. Education Traditionally, in the past, restorers apprenticed with masters to learn the tools of the trade. Skills and techniques may have also been passed down through generations of a family of restorers. These days, however, with the latest high technology, many restorers and conservators attend university or institutional conservation programs to learn such cutting-edge techniques and to even learn some ancient skills. If you are interested in becoming a fine art restorer or conservator, there are art conservation programs all around the world. Of particular note is theUniversity of Delaware Art Conservation Department, which has offered undergraduate, masters, and doctoraldegrees in art conservation since the 1970s. Students get to work in a museum that has 25 studios in which to learn the craft and technology.

Magnetically Repelling Ice

Magnetically Repelling Ice Magnetically Repelling Ice Magnetically Repelling IcePeople can be nervous fliers to begin with. Even when there isnt a cloud in the sky, there are few words that cause anxiety in some like, Prepare for takeoff. But add wintry conditions to the mix, add some ice, and the uneasy feeling can turn to fear. Now, a University of Houston team wants to help calm nerves, as well as increase safety, by preventing the harmful effects of icewith the aid of magnetic forces, of all things.Icy conditions are a problem in nature and industry, says Hadi Ghasemi, assistant professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Houston. I was in Canada and doing a Ph.D. at the University of Toronto in mechanical engineering. Its a serious problem over there. You couldnt open up a door of a car sometimes with ice building up, icing on airplanes. Even your air conditioner in homes has problems. I was constantly around these issues. In my group, we looked at different approac hes of nanotechnology for these problems and started to look at the problem of ice. At the same time, working with this magnetic fluid, I saw a possible solution and thats why I started this research in my group I think around a year ago.For now, the creation is simply called a magnetic slippery surface and is made of two components. The first is magnetic tape. This tape can be put on any surface, whether polymer, metal, et cetera. he says. The second component is ferrofluid, which he says is basically a mixture of fluid and magnetic nanoparticles, the latter being on the reservierung of 5 to 10 nanometers in diameter.A demonstration shows water rolling off of new icephobic surface. Image University of HoustonThe ultimate idea was that this combination would make sure ice never encounters a solid to cling to.Looking at a water drop mixing with a solid, it showed a strong bond has adhesion strength on the order of 100,000 pascals. That led to us asking How do we avoid this interface? he says. When ice builds up and has contact with a solid then it has a very solid bond and is very hard to detach, he says. When cold weather sits on a fluid surface, this combination of magnetic tape and ferrofluid doesnt allow the ice to see the solid and it just floats on the surface. Adhesion strength with this invention is 2 pascals, according to Ghasemi. I was definitely surprised it worked this well, that it could go this low. One of his goals, he says, is for it to be used in spray form.Ghasemi has enjoyed the process, particularly working with students to bring this invention to light. I came up with the idea but they have been critical in testing and so much more, he says. Its fun to see us moving this forward.Considering how many airline accidents and mishaps have been ice-related over the years, he hopes this will help avoid tragedy in the future. There has been strong enthusiasm from industry, he says. Im optimistic about its future.Eric Butterman is an independent wri ter. For Further Discussion

Teaching Ethics in B-School is Irrational Behavior

Teaching Ethics in B-School is Irrational Behavior Teaching Ethics in B-School is Irrational Behavior Dan Ariely, author of Predictably Irrational and Duke Fuqua professor, on the most irrational behaviors he sees in business schools:I think that business schools dont understand conflicts of interest. For example, they think that if they offer classes on morality and ethics, people will stop being immoral or unethical. That wont necessarily happen. Also, one of the things I hate the most in business education is case studies, because case studies give people the illusion that theyve actually learned a concept. Students only learn about one story in a case study. They cannot learn the whole situation. And on one of the most important tools business students can learn:I think we need to teach students more statistics. They need to know how to use existing data and how to generate new data in case the existing data does not provide an answer. The world works in statistical probabilities. As researchers, we generate a lot of data, about how compensation works, about what really motivates p eople, and who gets motivated by what. But we don't transmit that information nearly enough.[BizEd, via Paul Bodine]

Your Guide to Finding Government Jobs Online

Your Guide to Finding Government Jobs Online Your Guide to Finding Government Jobs Online Finding government jobs online is easy if you know where to look. There are countless websites that pull in information from official sites and look as though they are genuine government sites. These sites are created by professional associations, companies that government agencies have contracted with to post jobs and companies or individuals simply trying to make money from website visitors viewing or clicking on advertising. You do not need any of these ancillary sites if you can navigate to the official sites without them. The sites run by professional associations are typically reliable and can take you to the official job postings in one click. As for the sites run by companies or individuals, it is harder to tell whether they are legitimate. Government organizations are required to advertise jobs that are open to the public. This advertisement can be as minimal as uploading the job posting to the organization̢۪s website and leaving it up for a predetermined period. Anyone who is interested in applying must have the same opportunity to apply like anyone else. Jobs that are only open to current employees of the organization must be advertised to the organization̢۪s workforce but not to the public. Such jobs may include positions that supervise a highly specialized group where the new manager must have knowledge, skills or abilities that only someone currently working in that group would have. If someone outside the organization could do the job just as well as someone inside the organization, the job should be posted externally so that both internal and external candidates have the same chance to apply. Federal All civil services jobs with the US government are posted on USAJobs. Anyone can search for jobs without setting up an account. However, website users must set up an account to apply for jobs. Creating an account is simple, and it requires a minimal amount of personal information. Much more information is required, of course, to apply for a job. Once a person̢۪s information is loaded into the system, that person can use the same information over and over to apply for federal jobs. More often than not, an applicant would customize their information for each job posting. USAJobs is maintained by the Office of Personnel Management. Federal agencies are free to post job information on their websites, but they must post jobs on USAJobs. State Just like the federal government, each US state has its central website for job postings. Job boards for all 50 states allow you to see postings across the various agencies within the state. As a convenience to applicants, most states have a job application form that can be used with most if not all agencies within the state. Applicants can keep a master application and tweak it to fit each position they apply for. Local There is no single place to find local government jobs. If you want to work in local government, professional association websites can be helpful, especially if you are not limiting your job search geographically. Look for state or regional chapters of professional associations in your field or local government generally, such as the International City/County Management Association. If you are interested in a particular city, county, school district or other local government, your best option is to go to the organization̢۪s website to find their job postings. If you apply to more than one organization, you will almost certainly have to fill out a different application form for each entity. It can be frustrating, but it is necessary if you want to give yourself the best chance of landing a local government job.

New research Being rude at work can devastate your team

New research Being rude at work can devastate your team New research Being rude at work can devastate your team One snide remark or haughty sniff can not only ruin your day, but the rest of your team’s and client’s days too. That’s according to multiple studies on workplace incivility that all come to the same conclusion - being rude at work may feel good in the moment, but in the long-run, it never pays off.Study: Rudeness has ‘devastating effects’ on patientsBeing rude has far-reaching adverse effects beyond the tight circle of the person being rude and recipient of the snark. A 2015 study on doctor-patient interactions found that people being rude at work had “profound, if not devastating, effects on patient care.” To test this, the study got 24 teams of doctors and nurses who work in neonatal intensive care units in Israeli hospitals to undergo a simulated patient interaction. But first, half of them would be subjected to a rude interloper. Before the NICU teams would be asked to make a medical diagnosis, half of the teams faced an American expert making rude remarks unrelate d to their team performance. This expert told half of them that they “wouldn’t last a week” in his department and that he was “not impressed with the quality of medicine in Israel.”Ouch. These remarks were designed to sting, but it’s surprising how deeply these remarks got under these medical professionals’ skin. The doctors and nurses who heard these mildly rude statements were more likely to make serious mistakes that would result in the wrong diagnosis. The researchers believe that this is because rudeness interferes with our memories, where goal-planning and management occurs. But critically, rudeness also reduces team collaboration, which could make up for these memory deficiencies. The medical teams who heard rude statements had “reduced information-sharing among the physician and the two nurses,  which, in turn, harmed their diagnostic performance.”So even mildly rude words can wreck a team’s performance - and, disturbingly, cause harm to innocent bystande rs caught up in the workplace incivility.Rudeness makes us feel isolated and embarrassedWhy do rude words leave such lasting harm? Because how other people think of us shapes who we think we are.A 2017 study in the  Journal of Organizational Behavior  found that even when the rudeness is coming from a single perpetrator, it can severely impact our sense of job security and belonging in the workplace. This study found that people who experience workplace incivility reported feeling like their jobs were threatened and that they were alone. These feelings even resulted in bodily symptoms of stress like stomachaches and headaches for the victims of workplace incivility. When rudeness comes from someone in a position of power like your boss, the effects on participants’ psyche were even worse. When someone is rude to you at work, especially when it comes from your boss, it throws you off your game, and you begin to question your judgment and your place. As the study put it, we feel threatened by rudeness because we recognize that our value at work is conditional upon our relationships in the workplace: “One’s value to the group is not guaranteed; people scan and interpret signals from the environment to validate that they are and continue to be accepted,” the study says. “Experiencing incivility in the workplace may threaten one’s sense of value to the  organization, particularly because the intent behind incivility is often unclear.”

11 Words and Phrases to Use in Salary Negotiations

11 Words and Phrases to Use in Salary Negotiations 11 Words and Phrases to Use in Salary Negotiations Wouldn’t it be great if there were a magic word you could say in order to get people to agree with you? If, for example, a simple utterance of “abracadabra” could instantly convince your employer to see things your way, salary negotiations would be a whole lot easier. Unfortunately, we live in the real world, and those magic words that guarantee instant success don’t quite exist - but the good news is, we’ve got the next best thing. The following words and phrases are expert-level ways to demonstrate the confidence, congeniality, and knowledge necessary to secure a higher salary. Use these in your next negotiation , and you might just see a bump in your paycheck sooner than you can say “alakazam.” Too often, people think of salary negotiation as a battle: you, trying to get as much as you possibly can, versus your employer, trying to stay within budget. However, this type of thinking can be counterproductive, explains Roy Cohen, career coach and author of The Wall Street Professional’s Survival Guide . “Never engage in negotiation as an ultimatum - an either/or - but rather as a collaborative process and a unique opportunity to create a compensation package that makes sense for both you and for them. Establish priorities as to what is most important to you and what items you are willing to trade off,” Cohen advises. “Unless you know for sure that you are indispensable, and few of us ever are, successful negotiation should never become adversarial. That is a bad sign that the process has broken down or will,” Cohen continues. It’s only natural to see if you can get a higher salary than the one that you were offered, but it needs to be grounded in reality. Rather than just throwing out a number that you think sounds nice, you need to do your homework on what your skills are worth in order to provide a compelling case for your employer to compensate you accordingly. “One phrase to use is something along the lines of ‘based on my research.’  That shows the other person you’ve done your homework and know what you’re talking about when negotiating ,” says David Bakke, Writer/Contributor at Money Crashers . One tip to come to the negotiation table prepared: get a free, personalized salary estimate from Glassdoor’s Know Your Worthâ„¢ calculator. As part of your research, make sure you know what the market for your job is, says Labor & Employment Attorney Alex Granovsky of Granovsky & Sundaresh PLLC . “Market refers to what the employee can earn if he or she went out on the job market and found a new, similar position,” Granovsky says. “If you are making $80,000, but could get a job around the corner making $100,000, the ‘market’ suggests that you are being underpaid.” And since companies presumably don’t want to lose you to the competition, they take that number seriously. Value, on the other hand, “refers to what you bring to your employer,” Granovsky says. “From an employer’s perspective, each employee has to either (1) increase revenue, or (2) increase margin (ideally both). While probably not as compelling as the job market , if you can show to your employer how you are bringing ‘value’ to the company (in the form of increased revenue and/or increased margin), you can make a compelling case for a raise.” So if, for example, you can prove that a new initiative you implemented earned the company $100,000, asking for a $5,000 raise sounds a lot more palatable to your employer. Forget any advice you’ve received about not snooping into your coworkers’ salaries - it can be a powerful data point in negotiations. “‘Similarly situated employees’ are people who do what you do within the company,” Granovsky says. “If your position is ‘senior account manager’ and every other ‘senior account manager’ is making more money than you, this is something you should explore too.” While you certainly don’t want to force any of your colleagues to disclose information they’re not comfortable sharing, you can use tools like Glassdoor to find out what they’re making, and therefore, whether or not you’re being fairly compensated . If an employer offers a number that’s below your desired range , pushing back is essential - but you want to make sure you handle it with tact. Saying “is that number flexible at all” is a graceful way to “[give] the employer the opportunity to offer more, or even mention other perks you might be able to gain if a higher salary isn’t in the picture,” Bakke says. Blunt phrasing like “I need” or “I want” can be a turn-off to employers. But expressing your desired salary with this phrase “is a collaborative way to let the recruiter or hiring manager know specifically what you’re looking for so they can focus on that dimension of your job offer,” says Josh Doody , author of Fearless Salary Negotiation . “The rest of this sentence should be a specific ask. For example, the rest of this sentence might be ‘…we can settle on a base salary of $60,000.’ or ‘…we can increase the Restricted Stock Unit allotment to 100 units.’ Contrast this with something like, ‘Do you have any wiggle room?’, which is vague and allows them to say ‘No’ and short-circuit the negotiation,” Doody continues. We’ll let you in on a little secret - often times, recruiters are just as anxious as you for salary negotiations to  come to a close . So if you can specifically spell out what it would take for you to accept an offer, you’ll be doing recruiters and hiring managers a favor. “When you get to this phase of the negotiation, you want to make it clear to the recruiter or hiring manager that saying ‘Yes’ will end the negotiation so they’re more comfortable acquiescing,” Doody says. For example, you may want to say, “I understand you can’t come all the way up to $60,000. It would be great to add an additional week of paid vacation along with the $55,000 you suggested. If you can do that, I’m on board,” he suggests. This is a good one for employees who are negotiating raises to keep in their back pocket. Why? It comes down to the fact that it’s part of a defensible strategy, Cohen says. “A defensible strategy explains what you want, why you want it, and how it is a win/win for both your boss and for you. The goal is to show value and benefit,” Cohen says. If a low salary at work is truly a dealbreaker for you, “get an offer that you would be willing to accept, but prefer not to,” Cohen advises. “Tell your boss that you have received an offer, that it is attractive, [but] that you prefer not to leave… It is far cheaper to give you a raise than to recruit and train a new candidate.” But be warned: this phrase should not be taken lightly. “Know that this is a risky proposition: It could backfire.  So please don’t use it if you don’t really want to leave or don’t have a bona fide offer on the table,” Cohen cautions. Even if a job offer exceeds your expectations, try to play it cool. “The first thing you should do when you receive a job offer is ask for time to consider it,” Doody says. “This little phrase accomplishes several things. Primarily, it buys you time to consider the offer, determine the appropriate counteroffer, and begin building your case to support your counteroffer. [But] it also enables you to move the negotiation to email if it’s not already there,” Doody says. This, he says, is a key to successfully pulling off a counter-offer. “You want to counter offer over email whenever possible because you can be very deliberate with exactly what you say. Your salary negotiation will be more successful if you carefully choose your counteroffer amount and clearly articulate why you’re worth it,” he explains. Your pleases and thank-yous didn’t stop becoming important once you learned them in preschool - in the business setting, manners can mean everything. “At the end of the salary discussion,  be sure to thank the person for taking the time to sit down with you, just to maintain your professionalism,” Bakke says. Not only is it simply the right thing to do - an employer is much more likely to accommodate the wants and needs of somebody that shows them respect.

See the World 10 Jobs for People Who Love to Travel

See the World 10 Jobs for People Who Love to Travel See the World 10 Jobs for People Who Love to Travel Upon graduation I happily accepted my first offer for a full-time job as a store manager for a global retailer. Normally a retail job isn̢۪t considered glamorous, but I was thrilled about the job offer because it gave me the opportunity to relocate to a new city after graduation and to travel and work abroad.
